Trimethyl Sulfoxonium Iodide (TMSOI)-A versatile reagent for the synthesis of three membered-rings: Sulfoxonium ylides are a class of organic compounds that have been extensively studied for their reacting properties in modern synthesis. Several medicinal synthesis routes have been investigated and patented by international pharmaceutical companies, such as Schering, Merck & Co, Sumitomo pharmaceuticals, Pfizer, or HMR. Dimethyl sulfoxonium methylide, known as the Corey-Chaykovsky reagent (CCR), has proved to be a versatile nucleophilic agent capable of reacting with different chemical systems. Undoubtedly, its industrial availability coupled with its potential to achieve original chemical transformations make it a choice reagent for the synthesis of new leads and innovative substances.....

Local:
Trimethylsulfoxonium iodide is useful for preparing ylides in strong base condition. The Treatment with strong base (such as sodium hydride) yields the ylide which adds to the carbonyl group of ketones and aldehydes to generate the Corey-Chaykovsky reagent . Also cyclopropanation can be carried out in ionic liquids with high yields preferentially to the double bond of alpha,beta-unsaturated esters to give cyclopropyl esters.

Example of end products from Trimethylsulphoxonium iodide are anti-fungal agents such as Fluconazole.
